Lockheed Electra 10E flown by Amelia Earhart & Fred Noonan went missing on 2 July 1937

Amelia Earhart was a pioneer female aviator with celebrity status.

In 1937, Amelia Earhart began a round-the world flight in a Lockheed Electra 10E aircraft. Initially her crew included Harry Manning as navigator but he was later replaced by Fred Noonan.

On 2 July 1937, Earhart and Noonan departed Lae in the Electra, headed for Howland Island over 4000 km away. But they never arrived.

The search for the missing pilots was unprecedented but also unsuccessful.

The US Government investigation into the aircraft's disappearance concluded that the aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in the ocean.

Mysteries such as the disappearance of a well-known and popular aviator attract enduring attention. There have been many searches since 1937. And this incident has (like MH370) also attracted speculation.
