Tomorrow marks one year since the tragic disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH 370.
“For the families and friends of the 239 passengers and crew on board the past year has been one of anguish, deep sorrow and a daily struggle to come terms with their loss. The disaster has left an unfillable hole in many lives,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said.
“At this time, more than ever, our thoughts are with the loved ones of those on board the aircraft and, in particular, those who have called Australia home.
“Having spent time with the Australian families over the past few days, I share their sense of helplessness at not knowing what happened to the aircraft. Not knowing is compounding their loss.
“It is for this reason that the governments of Australia, Malaysia and the People's Republic of China remain committed to the search for the missing aircraft. The families deserve answers and we are doing all we can to get them.
“Locating the plane and its flight recorders offers the best hope of finding answers to the mystery of what happened and help to bring some comfort and closure to all those who have lost loved ones.
“The underwater search for MH 370 is continuing with over 43 per cent of the 60,000 square kilometre priority search area now completed. Assuming no significant delays with vessels, equipment or from the weather, the current underwater search area should be largely completed by the end of May.
“Currently four vessels are involved in the underwater search. These vessels employ a range of equipment including side scan sonar, multi-beam echo sounders and video cameras to locate and identify aircraft debris in waters up to 6kms deep.
“We wish the searchers well and all speed in their endeavours, news of which every family member eagerly awaits.
“A year on, our collective resolve for answers remains steadfast.”
